Kim Jones' Human Futurism For Fendi Spring/Summer 2024 Haute Couture

In a parade of sequins, fur, and glittering fringe, Fendi's Spring/Summer 2024 Haute Couture collection is the hand-in-hand creation of both traditional atelier craftsmanship and innovative new techniques.

“I was thinking about Karl Lagerfeld’s futurism with Fendi” said Jones. “In the collection there is a humanism at the heart of this future; there’s the body, the silhouette within the silhouette, the person and the handwork of the couture. The collection is about structure and decoration, where the two become indivisible. I wanted an idea of precision and emotion at once.”

Simplicity, organic geometry, and precision were at the heart of the Spring/Summer 2024 Haute Couture collection, resulting in pieces that emphasized a journey of humanity throughout the ages, pulling style elements from the past and reanimating them with new purpose. Supple crocodile leather details run throughout the collection, acting as a "primal pull" that anchors the collection in the roots of human society and performs on the runway as both a decorative and structural component, emphasizing the conversation between poetry and reality in the collection created by Jones. Appearing in the form of bespoke Baguette bags and sleek dresses and jackets, the sophisticated use of croc leather weaves the collection together, showcasing the renowned Fendi leatherworking at its finest.

Silk gazar, super kid mohair, cashmere and vicuna yarns, and feather-like fringe are at the forefront of the collection, the soft, delicate materials lending themselves to the flowing, dynamic silhouettes that move along with the model, reinforcing the core intention of the collection—the humanity of the person wearing the couture. The airy, ethereal fabrics that the collection is composed of are precisely cut into lightweight styles and volumes, with expert tailoring embracing the wearer and elegantly following the form of the female body.

From the boxy, geometric "Scatola" silhouette to the knotted Shibari harnesses, texture and depth are in abundance in the haute couture collection, optimizing dynamic details in their many forms. Tightly knit embroidery appears in the collection, merging decoration and structure into one form, appearing almost as a futuristic skin constructed in equal parts by manmade and natural forces, resulting in a garment that represents the splicing and fusion of the two worlds.

In keeping with the collection's emphasis on precious practicality, fine jewelry and accessories are on full display—featuring 18K white gold and diamond-embedded eyewear from the Singular Vision collection by Delfina Delettrez Fendi and new Baguette bags by Silvia Venturini Fendi crafted in polished crocodile leather, intensely worked intricate embroidery and a diamond-laden platinum finish. Incorporating elements of style and design from the clothing collection, the featured jewelry and accessories complete the couture ensemble, rounding out the looks with precious, yet personal objects.

Through furriers, leatherworkers, tailors, pattern cutters, embroiderers, dressmakers, and the creative visionaries behind the looks presented on the runway, the vision of futurism through design was achieved—one that embraced practicality and pragmatism over mere costuming and visual interest.

In attendance of the front rows of Fendi's couture show were friends of the house, including Zendaya, Reese Witherspoon and her daughter Ava Philippe, Filipino actress and model Heart Evangelista, Mina of the Korean pop group Twice, Hyekeyo Song—Korean actress and brand ambassador and French actress Adèle Exarchopolous.
